Cinder Ridge
18-hole championship public golf course
designed by owner George Kappos was 4 years in the making.
Nominated for best design in 1995 by Golf Digest and 4 Stars
**** in 2004
Cinder Ridge spreads through 350 acres which winds
over and through diving ravines, flat areas and coal refuse, created
70 years ago by the mining operations.
This particular site was the tipple where remnants are evident throughout
the course.
Our
10,000 sq. foot clubhouse is built on the same steel frame structure
where the main offices of Peabody Coal were held from 1927 to
1953. Pictures
are displayed in the lobby.
The name CINDER RIDGE derived from the ridge
of cinders that are still visible. Coal fragments, like sand
were used originally throughout all traps. After experimenting
for two seasons with coal, we replaced them with sand.
FIVE SETS OF TEES...enable golfers to enjoy
the course at their own level of challenge--from 4840 yards
to 6968 yards.
WATER comes into play on 14 holes strategically
located to add a picturesque
charm and a challenge for every golfer. Only three bodies of water
require a carry shot -- most run laterally along the fairways
to heighten the challenge
and the beauty of the course without unfairly testing the average
golfer.
The design of the course is tough on the tees but
eases off on
the fairways. Tees areas are unusually large offering the opportunity
for varied tee
positions that lengthen or shorten the hole and provide different
playing angles. In
addition, the large tees on all par 3's prevent excessive wear
in any
one area and provide the golfer consistent quality conditions.
Most greens are very receptive to the approach
shots.Sixty-eight traps are designed not to be annoying. Greens
are medium to large (5,000 to 8,000 sq. feet), most
are relatively flat.
The course is extremely
well marked to yardage...to speed play.
With your cooperation rounds should take no more than 4:15.

appointed clubhouse is

pro shop, locker rooms with showers and full service deli. In addition,
